RETOURN – Recovery Tourism after Natural Disaster
The RETOURN – Recovery Tourism after Natural Disaster Erasmus+ project aimed to support tourism professionals in managing recovery processes following natural disasters. The project addressed the growing challenges posed by earthquakes, floods, pandemics, and other natural events, which have significant economic and social impacts on tourism destinations and local communities.
The project was implemented between 15 December 2021 and 14 June 2024 under Italian coordination within an international partnership. The consortium brought together organisations, universities, chambers of commerce, and training institutions from Italy, Greece, Slovenia, Germany, and Hungary, including Trebag Ltd.
At the heart of the project was the development of a new professional profile—the Tourism Recovery Expert—designed to support the recovery of tourism destinations after natural disasters. As part of the project, the partnership developed a comprehensive competence framework, online learning materials, Open Educational Resources (OER), practical workshop methodologies, and blended learning training programmes.
One of the project’s distinctive features was the application of the serious play methodology, enabling participants to strengthen crisis management, decision-making, and strategic thinking skills through realistic scenarios and interactive learning experiences. In the long term, the project contributes to increasing the resilience of the tourism sector, improving disaster recovery competencies, and supporting more sustainable and effective recovery processes across Europe.
